In an effort to provide sustenance to its drought-stricken population,
Namibia has devised a plan to cull 723 wild animals, including 83
elephants, and distribute the meat to those struggling to feed
themselves due to the severe drought affecting southern Africa.
The culling will be carried out in parks and communal areas where
authorities believe the number of animals exceeds the available grazing
land and water resources, as said in a statement released on Monday.
Southern Africa is currently experiencing its worst drought in decades,
with Namibia having depleted 84% of its food reserves last month, as
reported by the United Nations. It is anticipated that nearly half of
Namibia's population will face high levels of food insecurity in the
coming months.
The environment ministry warned that without intervention, the severe
drought is likely to increase human wildlife conflicts. "To this effect,
83 elephants from identified conflict areas will be culled, (and) meat
will be allocated to the drought relief program," the statement said.
In addition to elephants, the country plans to cull 30 hippos, 60
buffalo, 50 impala, 100 blue wildebeest, 300 zebra, and 100 eland.
