where everybody seems to try to be the next Bill W. or the spokesperson
for Secular AA...In many cases, there is not much civility either.

people gravitate to certain social media. Hence, fervid Democrats

Interesting thing about that list is -

There was a fair number at that time who asked to not be on the list or
be removed from it. The reasoning of the day, as I recall it, was that
there was an increasing tendency in AA to use sobriety dates as some
sort of hierarchy... as some sort of dick-measurement... some saw that
as a general direction things were headed. Most, as I remember it, did
not agree or saw no harm in the list.

As one little blip in Usenet, they were probably right about no harm.

Or, maybe I don't remember the discussion too well at all.

Nonetheless... Sadly, the direction of AA, has (I say) been as
predicted. Used to be about humility - now it's mostly about
self-important arrogance. Pecking orders and dick-measurers wondering
what happened to all those old-timers that just quit coming.

No, I have pretty similar recollection.
I enjoy going through that list when it pops up from time to time,
because it's nice to see so many old familiar names. Many of them
were also familiar people (i.e., I knew more of them than just the
name).

Someone else commented it was a list of people who dropped by. Not so,
I'd say. Probably 2/3 of those names stuck around for a while & when
coupled with those not on the list, it made the participation level
hard to follow. Thing was that somewhere around 01 or 02 the trolling
level really escallated and the usenet providers didn't want to do much
about it (bet they regret that now).
But, right about that time, the trolling from within (i.e. all the
bickering babies who had nobody to argue with in person)started to
become more than was worth sifting through. By 08 or so, the political
crap went full roll and within a few years it was only a handful all
fighting among themselves.
Shame, too, as I, like I guess you are saying, look through that list
and remember some really good folks. A number of them are people who I
got to know outside of araa.
But late 90's and early oughts, we had a *lot* of fun. Do you remember
Grayson's Christmas Party and Gift exchange? *That* was worth spending
some time staring at a computer screen for!

BTW, do I see your name not on that list or am I just mmissing it? If
not, do you see that concern as having come to reality?

that drove the goz nuts.

Yeah, I'm not so sure. I think in the early days there was a
common feling of community, and people were willing to support
things like Usenet. As corporate interests took hold, the lack of
any kind of meaningful revenue from Usenet gradually ended support
for it by most ISPs. My original provider (Iowa Network Services)
eventually even dropped shell accounts. Sad.

Shame, too, as I, like I guess you are saying, look through
that list and remember some really good folks. A number of them
are people who I got to know outside of araa. But late 90's and
early oughts, we had a *lot* of fun. Do you remember Grayson's
Christmas Party and Gift exchange? *That* was worth spending
some time staring at a computer screen for!

I remember Grayson as a decent, engaging person, but not the
exchange. I might have been away for a spell. There were times
that work was crazy and I didn't always get completely caught up
when the craziness abated.

No, I never put it on there. I had mixed feelings about whether
it would be right to do so, and always came back to the fact that
once I put it out there it couldn't be taken back. I doubt it was
humility, but who knows. <shrug>

Similarly, I usually don't post my last name, but neither do I go
to any great lengths to hide it. I figure if someone wants to
know, they can figure it out. I've got nothing to hide (and
little to brag about). For a number of years early on, I used
"Principles before Personalities" in my .sig. Not to make any
point, but more to remind me to check my intent before letting a
post go out.

Yeah, you've used a lot of variations over the years, but I've

Looking south of the border, from up here in Canada, from the numbers it
looks like that for every person despondent over the election results,
there was slightly more than one person happy....judging from the 4.5
million presidential vote difference. We, too, in Canada have our
political conflicts...on the municipal, provincial AND federal levels.
Where I live we have both municipal and federal elections in about 11
months...lots of "housecleaning" to be done. Out with the self-styled
progressives, hopefully, and according to all the polls.
